Scholarships for College-Bound Youth
We are pleased to announce that UNH partner, Viacom, has generously offered to sponsor scholarships for youth leaders from settlement houses. Viacom/MTV staff will choose the winners of the scholarships and will also host the awards ceremony on June 13th at Viacom’s Paramount theater where our scholarship winners will be treated like the stars they are!
The 2012 Viacom College Scholarship Application is out and responses are due by April 23, 2012.

For the past four years, youth scholarships had been made possible by The Allan Morrow Foundation, which recently closed its doors. UNH has awarded a total of 42 graduating high school seniors with $2,000 scholarships over a four-year period and is thrilled to be able to continue to offer this benefit to deserving youth!

Jaquan Arzu recently graduated from Validus Prepatory Academy, where he was active in many extra-curricular activities, such as Build On and the Gay Straight Alliance Club. Jaquan was an active member of Sista and Brothas United, a youth collaborative that helped to save the student metro-cards. He was nominated by New Settlement Apartments. Jaquan will be attending Marist College in the fall.
Roberto Brutus recently graduated from Talented Unlimited High School, where he was active in student government and the Gay Straight Alliance. He has also participated in the Jazz and Gospel Choirs, as well as the Hip Hop Group. Roberto was nominated by Union Settlement Association. He will be attending St. John’s University in the fall.
Quanisha Davis is a recent graduate of Frank Sinatra School of the Arts. She has been active in the Girls Group, the Basketball Team and Teen Productions. Quanisha has received service awards from Hudson Guild and her high school. Some of her volunteer activities include the AIDS walk and Big Brothers Big Sisters Kids Walk. She was nominated by Hudson Guild and will attend Pace University in the fall. Read a poem by Quanisha Davis, student speaker at 2011 awards ceremony.
Jhmar Galloway is a recent graduate of Multicultural High School, where he has been active on the Varsity Soc-cer Team and as a Peer Tutor. Jhmar is a Merit Award recipient and has been named the 2011 Valedictorian of his class. He was nominated by Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation and will be attending Syracuse University in the fall.
Ria McKenzie recently graduated from Fashion Industries High School, where she was a member of the Track Team, Fashion Cares and a Peer Leader. She was a Teen Advocate at Citizens Committee for Children and participated in the Sadie Nash Leadership Project. Ria was nominated by Henry Street Settlement and will be attending Florida A&M University in the fall.
Estephania Paredes recently graduated from Manhattan Village Academy. She has played both the trombone and bass guitar. Estephania is an intern for The Media Show, where she works on current events. She is an advocate for sex education and appeared on The Brian Leher Show. Goddard Riverside Community Center nominated Estephania. She will be attending Stony Brook University in the fall.
