Hartley House

Hartley House, founded in 1897, is a settlement house and a community center that provides essential human services and sponsors activities to improve the quality of life and strengthen a sense of community in Hell's Kitchen/Clinton.
Professional Development for College Access Staff
25,000 young people use settlement house college access, GED, alternate schools and dropout prevention services each year.
Helping low-income young people prepare for college, understand their options and navigate the many steps associated with applying for college and obtaining necessary financial assistance are among the critical youth development services provided by UNH members.
UNH is strengthening the capacity of its member organizations to provide effective college access services for low-income students through a partnership with the Options Institute, run by UNH member Goddard Riverside Community Center. The Institute provides a professional development program for selected staff from UNH agencies. The participants in the UNH project are college access staff serving primarily low-income students. Public and private funds run many of these college access programs, but resources are not adequate to support the staff training that is essential to effective college access programs. This project strengthens college access services by building skills that staff need to work effectively with their students. UNH also convenes a professional peer group of staff working in college access programs to share resources and problem-solve. This project has been funded by the Citi Foundation.
