Program Overview and Position Description: Working closely with an experienced co-facilitator, the part-time Instructor/Activity Specialist will plan and implement multiple program components, beginning with Project V.I.P. (Voice, Identity, Power), a theater-arts and dramatic writing after school program for girls (grades 6-12), based on the principles and practice of positive youth development.  Responsibilities include the development and evaluation of curriculum, following the established program model; researching and preparing program readings, including poetry, plays and fiction by women; developing original scripts with participants; and directing and managing an original theatrical performance by the girls at the end of each semester. Project V.I.P. operates three semesters per year: fall and spring sessions are 14 weeks each (two 90-minute afternoon sessions per week); + six-week summer intensive.


Staff also needed for after-school (and summer) classes designed to increase self-esteem, fitness, financial literacy and community engagement for middle school aged youth as well as girls in grades 4 & 5, working from licensed and field-tested curricula.


The Program for Girls & Young Women at New Settlement is gender-specific: program participants identify as girls/young women, gender non-conforming youth included.


Experience, Education & Skills Required: Minimum of 2 years previous experience planning and leading arts and/or literacy activities with youth (preferably teens) in a community-based setting. College degree required. Background in performing arts, creative writing and/or literature required. Additional background in /experience with health education, fitness and/or service learning a plus. Ability to listen to and communicate effectively with program staff, participants and their families, and diverse program partners.  Previous experience with girls-only programming desirable. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, under the supervision of the Director of Programs for Girls.  English/Spanish bilingual skills a plus. Overview of New Settlement Apartments: New Settlement is a non-profit, mixed-income housing organization with an excellent reputation and 27-year track record of active commitment to neighborhood revitalization, community building and organizing, and positive youth development.  Our community programs currently provide year-round educational, cultural, recreational and social services to over 13,500 youth and adults who live in the surrounding area. 

Salary Information

Rate of pay: $18-$24 hourly, depending on experience.
Hours: This is a part-time position, minimum 3 afternoons, maximum 4 afternoons (and/or evenings) a week. Hours range from 8-16 hours per week during the school year (between 3-8pm). In summer the position remains part-time, but can increase up to a max of 35 hours/wk for 6 weeks. Additional hours October-June include performances, once monthly staff meetings, and program trips on weekends or school breaks.
